Oil, a powerful and dangerous substance, secreted naturally, is part of a cycle by nature, but if humans interfere with this cycle, things can go horribly wrong. Excess oil can be put into places where it doesn't belong, and nature is disrupted. A tanker spill can be accidental, or on purpose. In cases like the Exxon Valdez it was an accident, and in cases like the war in the Persian Gulf, it was on purpose. Either way, oil is deadly to all organisms if used wrongly.
A dark substance that is in huge masses called mousse, which is a combination of water and oil, is created when an oil spill occurs. Mousse is usually the cause of the most damage to the environment. Mousse sticks to all that come in contact with it, and mainly adheres itself to animals. It can suffocate an animal, as the crude oil gets into their fur, and cannot be washed off easily. Animals can also be susceptible to many other things, such as dehydration, starvation, and exposure. Mousse can be very dangerous, especially when the animal is young.
