Oedipus - Overcoming your Obstacles Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

When it comes to an epic, we think of a story or poem about a heroic person. We think of someone who has done great deeds and has saved the world. We see a person who has died but left his mark in the end. The epic of Gilgamesh was an epic about a quest hero. The story of Oedipus was more of an epic about a tragic hero. These two epics were very different but alike all at the same time. In this paper, I will be comparing and contrasting the epics of Gilgamesh and Oedipus while using these characters. Gilgamesh was the King of Uruk in Babylonian. He was an individual who embarked on a journey to achieve a goal. He was two-thirds god and two-thirds human, which makes him a mortal. Gilgamesh was remembered as one of the strongest human beings to live. Although he was a strong man, he was a bad ruler who took advantage of his subjects just to prove he was more powerful. In response to his harshness, his people made Enkidu. Enkidu would be Gilgamesh's equal or companion. This friendship would lead Gilgamesh to change his ways for good and become a better man.
