"An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" (Mohandas Gandhi). Human beings always seem to need to blame others for everything. 1690's in Salem or the rest of the United States during the 1940's and late 1950's, it seems as if Americans found it easier to make accusations without proof rather than accept the truth. Both The Crucible by Arthur Miller and McCarthyism are scary examples of mass hysteria. Accusations were made and like blind sheep everybody else just followed. Nineteen people hung and one was crushed. All these innocent men and women were accused of being witches. This madness was caused by mass hysteria. The Crucible is a reflection of how humans get caught up with a crowd and soon forget what is true. Psychologists call it groupthink. This happens when "each one of us is more willing to trust another than to judge for himself" (Seneca). Crowd mentality gave Abigail the power to make false accusations seem true.
