In the years before the Civil War American society was shifting in many different aspects. Abolitionists cried for the freedom of slaves, passionate ministers of the second Great Awakening preached of humanity and the ever prevailing "war against the drink" endured. Throughout these years, the role of women in society also changed. Two articles that illustrate this are The Cult of True womanhood 1820-1860 by Barbra Welter and The Lady and the Mill Girl: Changes in the Status of Women in the Age of Jackson by Gerda Lerner In Gerder Lerners's article, she states that "...decisive changes occurred in the status of American women..." in regards to the period taking place between 1800 and 1840. She first discusses the fact that during the colonial era, there was a shortage of women in America, thus making them important. Also at this point in time, women seemed to have more freedom than they would in later years. Women worked outside the home, either alongside their husbands or in other establishments.
