Theme of Blindness in Madame Bovary
In the novel, Madame Bovary, Flaubert creates a realist story of a young woman who is raised in a strict convent, who then tries to fulfill her dreams of a fantasy life by marrying a man that does not make her happy. Then in the end makes her miserable and in the eventually drives her to commit suicide. Through the good and bad times of the novel, blindness is clearly seen in Emma, Charles, and the blind beggar.
At a young age, Emma loved reading romance novels. She put herself in the lives of the characters and dreamed her life would turn out just as happy and wonderful. Emma was blind to the fact that the romance novels she was reading were not real and were just a fantasy. The places and events of the romance novels were created by the author and were not real life. Emma was not satisfied with the country life, she would love, if only for the winter, to live in the city (Flaubert 863).
