The Demise of Lady Macbeth Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Throughout Shakespeare’s classic and timeless play, “Macbeth”, we witness the slow decline of Lady Macbeth. We ponder if Lady Macbeth has the strength to put her emotions aside and cope with the steadfast ambition of her husband. When we are first introduced to Lady Macbeth, she seems to want her husband to pursue the prophecies of becoming the king of Scotland at all costs. Does she actually feel this way or is this just a clever façade? Lady Macbeth purports to be a strong character not affected by her husband’s crimes, while in fact she is emotionally tormented and deeply affected by them. This is because Lady Macbeth is an emotionally unstable person. In addition, Lady Macbeth is a wordsmith and uses these abilities to mask her true feelings. Finally she is a coward and uses suicide as an avoidance tactic to escape the guilt of murder. Lady Macbeth becomes emotionally unstable when the murders and heinous crimes committed by her husband take a large toll on her conscience. She cracks under the weight of guilt.
