What a Tragedy! The Golden Age of Greece, circa 480 B.C. to 380 B.C., brought about a different outlook on life for the Athenian people. The explosion of creative and intellectual genius incited a deep appreciation for life and the arts; and a re-evaluation of the Greeks’ views of human purpose and relationships. For centuries, the ancient Greeks had held a strong belief in the powerful, fate-controlling gods of Mount Olympus. With the Golden Age of Greece, however, came a challenge to these beliefs. It wasn’t long before the change in thought and way of life appeared in the period’s literature and drama. The Poetics, a literary criticism written by Aristotle nearly forty years after the Golden Age and based on his study/analysis of its drama, discusses the essential elements of a successful tragedy. To begin, he defines tragedy as “an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude…” (Aristotle 544).
