A Rose for Emily Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“A Rose for Emily” Critical Approaches In analyzing “A Rose for Emily,” the group of which I was a member used the school of view of feminist criticism. We concentrated on things like Faulkner’s use of sexual discrimination and how he portrays women as weak and worthless. The other possible views for critiquing the story was psychological/Freudian, Marxist/sociological and Southern/historical. Each viewpoint had excellent interpretations of “A Rose for Emily”, the psychological perspective mainly focused on Emily’s biological history of mental illness and her fathers abusive behavior. The Marxist/sociological viewpoint centered on the hierarchy between rich and poor and capitalism. And the Southern/historical criticism the dying of the Old South, the social hierarchy and how it was related to Emily and Homer. Using the feminist perspective our group focused on the way that Faulkner portrays women throughout the whole story, which obviously points to the intentional stereotypes of which he displays.
