In ¡°The Wife of Martin Guerre¡± the author Janet Lewis uses imagery to define and identify significant understandings of the themes, issues, values and attitudes presented in the feudal setting of the novel. The Imagery reflects the relationships and conflict presented in the text, and also works to enhance the audience¡¯s understanding of characters and themes. Lewis¡¯ description through imagery foreshadows, establishes and reinforces our understanding of each of the three settings, Artigues, Reiux, and Toulouse in the novel. The novel is set in a heavily feudal Sixteenth Century France and the highly ordered patriarchal structure is presented both simply and richly. Society sustains a stable, predictable order, in which women are the backbone of that order, assuming their roles as wives and mothers, and men are the rulers and authority figures who hold responsibility for the management of land, households, and the continuity of the family line. Sixteenth Century bourgeois were at the mercy of nature and therefore had little control over their own lives and prosperity. ......
