The world today is fast paced, so fast that, at times, it seems impossible to care for anyone but one's self . This greedy, self-centered approach to living is often the cause of many problems in everyday life. In fact, in his novel The Pearl, John Steinbeck uses the doctor, the priest, and even Kino himself as symbols to illustrate the idea that greed destroys innocence
The doctor perfectly exemplifies this idea. On pages 14 and 15, the doctor refuses to see Coyotito because his parents have no money. He even says "I, I alone in the world am expected to work for nothing -- and I am tired of it." (pg. 15) The doctor's obvious greed almost cost Kino's son his life. However, this was not the only meeting between Kino and the doctor concerning Coyotito. The doctor shows up again on pages 40-42 to 'treat' the child of a scorpion sting. However, contrary to the Hippocratic oath, he gives Coyotito a poison. This allows him to come back later and cure the baby again (pg. 45) -- for a nominal fee of course.
