The Historical Significance of Andrei Rublev To Russian people, Andrei Rublev was not just the greatest icon-painter but the prophet. People adored him because in his paintings he emphasized hope, faith, love and bright future. Rublev tried to persuade people that their spirit is free under any regime, that they can search for truth in any kind of events – this is the main lesson of his paintings. During oppressive time nobody liked to be reminded about internal strife between Russian aristocracy, Tatars' aggression, general slavery, death, and crippling crisis of faith. People wanted to believe that soon they would be relived from Mongol’s domination and their suffering will come to an end. Russian proverb states, “Necup’ mne sol’ na rany” meaning “Don’t place salt on open wound” clearly summaries how people hated to be reminded that their life is all about distress and no hope.
