African American author James Baldwin believed this. A passage in the autobiography Black Boy by African American writer Richard Write qualifies this quote. Indeed, language is important as a key to identity and social acceptance. A particular passage about Write reading his own speech, instead of the principals, uses rhetorical techniques such as detail, diction, and assumptions to support the idea of the significance of language.
A detail in the passage that stood out was the fact that he gave his own speech and afterwards a few of his classmates shook his hand and he also was invited to a party.
