There were many Indian tribes in Pennsylvania. There was the Seneca, Delaware, Shawnee, Tuscarora, Allegewe, and many more but, I pick the Erie to do my report.
The Erie is a short form of the word Eriehonan which means long tail referring to the raccoon. The French use to call them Nation du Chat which means Cat Nation, because they wore the skins of the cat like animals. The raccoon appeared as the main figure on their totem pole.
Nobody exactly knows where the range of the Erie Indians because of Jesuits who, lacked direct contact with them, obtained his information second handed from another Iroquoian tribe. 1. The Erie have been located by some researchers across the southern shore of Lake Erie from Buffalo, New York, to Toledo, Ohio, and as far as Virginia. But the most reliable source data limit Erie area from the Niagara Frontier region of the western New York, west through Erie County, Pennsylvania, to perhaps as far west as Conneaut, Ohio.
