INTRODUCTION
My paper begins with a brief examination of the historical link between Suffrage and the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). I will attempt to explain through a sequence of events how the ERA was defeated. I plan to support, my claim that men successfully defeated the ERA by creating a division between women. In other words, one of the oldest tactics in warfare, divide and conquer was used by men against women with the aide of other women. Empowered men made promises and politically set women against women. The power that be men and women who opposed passage of the 19th Amendment were humiliated and defeated.But, those who had championed suffrage still were not satisfied; they wanted even more rights for women. This action reenergized those in opposition to women having the same rights as white men. The opposition groups vowed to do whatever it would take to see that the ERA would never pass because they felt that women had gone too far.
In addition, my paper will single out a few women and men that represented the supporters and oppositions in the birth and success......
