The Comanche Culture By Sean Martin ANT 100 Cultural Anthropology Chris Johnson 15 November 2006 I chose to write my essay on the Comanche Culture because I have always been fascinated by Indians since I was a young boy and decided it would be wiser to do my essay on a culture I was interested in rather than one I could find plenty of sources on but have no interest in. The Comanches were exceptional horsemen who dominated the Southern Plains of America they played a important role in Texas frontier history throughout much of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Historical evidence indicates that they were originally a mountain tribe, a branch of the Northern Shoshones, who roamed the Great Basin region of the western United States as crudely equipped hunters and gatherers. Both cultural and linguistic similarities confirm the Comanches' Shoshone origins. The Comanche language is derived from the Uto-Aztecan linguistic family and is virtually identical to the language of the Northern Shoshones.
