Lifespan and developmental psychology The purpose of this essay is to evaluate one theoretical approach to lifespan psychology to see if development happens continuously or in stages, the Psychologist in question is Jean Piaget and it is his theory of child development will be examined. Piaget believed that children’s development was linear and followed a set path. He developed a four-stage model of child development that reflects this. The four stages of his model were as follows, the sensorimotor stage, the preoperational stage, the concrete operational stage and the formal operational stage. Piaget believed that children’s thought changes qualitatively as they pass through stages. A new stage of development is reached when two things happen, the child’s brain must have matured to a point of ‘readiness’ and secondly, some new information or experiences that cannot be assimilated challenge the child’s thinking. When the child is ‘ready’, new experiences will lead to a major reorganisation of schemas so that a new and qualitatively different stage of cognitive deve......
