8.1 Electric Charge (Pg. 259)
Atomic charge
Atoms contain protons, neutrons and electrons. Protons have a positive charge, neutrons no charge, and electrons a negative charge.
Electric charge cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred from one object to another.
Objects may become negatively charged due to an excess of electrons.
A deficit in electrons will result in a positively charged object.
Like charges repel and unlike attract. The closer the charges are to each other, the stronger the force between them.
Unit for Charge.
The fundamental unit of charge is called the elementary charge and is given the symbol e. It is the smallest charge found in nature.
Thus, +e is the charge on a proton and e is the charge on an electron. This is a VERY small unit, in practice a much larger unit of charge is used the coulomb, symbol C.
1 C = 6.242 1018 elementary charges
Hence, the magnitude of the charge on 1 proton (or electron):
e = 1.602 10-19 C
