It is only in the last few years that adult's conversation with children has been studied carefully with more concentration to the role it plays in children's language learning. After a long observational study, it is now established that adults speak to infants and young children in different ways from the way they talk to other adults . The differences in language that is directed to children is often called "baby talk" or "motherese", altough it is used by other adults and older children as well as by mothers. Several studies have compared the speech used by adults when addressing young children with the speech used when addressing other adults or older children. Some of the characteristic modifications of motherese are: 1. Shorter utterances 2. Highly intelligible, less dysfluent 3. Well-formed grammatical sentences 4. Slower rate 5.
