Personality theories have in common to describe or explain the nature of human behaviour (Hogan, 1976). Although many definitions have been offered by investigators, personality can be broadly defined as the “stable set of characteristics and tendencies that determine those commonalities and differences in the psychological behaviour (thoughts, feelings, and actions) of people that have continuity in time and that may or may not be easily understood in terms of the social and biological pressures of the immediate situation” (Maddi, 1972, p. 9). The study of personality is, therefore, concerned with the analysis of similarities from person to person and how these combine to create individual differences that account for people’s unique behaviour in various social and environmental settings (Ryckman, 1997). In addition, the definition points to the enduring characteristics of personality, which has value in predicting the future actions of others (Schultz, 1981).
