Hemingways short story A clean, well lighted place is about the nothingness, the insignificance that men feel. The story turns around two waiters and an old deaf customer in a café late at night, and takes place in Spain, probably during the civil war. The nothingness is communicated in the short story through the form and the language used by the writer, through the meaning of the café for the characters and through the older waiters monologue according to this feeling of nothingness.
What happens in this story? Nothing. Indeed, the story is empty, nothing really happens, and this shows the failure of communication that exists in this story between the characters. We can notice that its a detail less story. Indeed, we dont know the names of the characters.
