Hemingway’s short story “ A clean, well lighted place” is about the nothingness, the insignificance that men feel. The story turns around two waiters and an old deaf customer in a café late at night, and takes place in Spain, probably during the civil war. The nothingness is communicated in the short story through the form and the language used by the writer, through the meaning of the café for the characters and through the older waiter’s monologue according to this feeling of nothingness. What happens in this story? Nothing. Indeed, the story is empty, nothing really happens, and this shows the failure of communication that exists in this story between the characters. We can notice that it’s a detail less story. Indeed, we don’t know the names of the characters. They are just introduced as “the younger waiter” (68) or “the waiter who was in a hurry” (70), “the older waiter” (71) or “the unhurried waiter”(70), and “the old man (68).
