Dana Burd English301 3/12/07 Walking Shadows in Robert Frost’s “Out, Out” Named for a famous speech from Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Robert Frost’s poem “Out, Out-” (468) echoes the idea that life is transitory and often results in sudden yet fleeting tragedy. Both center on the death of a young person, “brief candle” (Macbeth5.5.23) in a world which moves on without them allowing for only a brief pause in action; their lives “signifying nothing” (Macbeth 5.5.28). The poem develops as a story told by the speaker of a boy who suffers a fatal accident while working with a buzz saw. Throughout the poem Frost uses tone, imagery and structure to support the theme that life is temporary and insignificant.
