The Evolution of Dreams in Of Mice and Men Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

“‘They ain’t got nothing to look ahead to’” (Steinbeck 14). In John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, most characters lead a life of loneliness and regret. They subsist in a demanding life, existing only to do their job and nothing more. However, the two main characters, George and Lennie, have the knowledge that a dream can forge friendship, initiate perseverance, and lighten the burden of living day to day. The theme of dreams evolves from an idyllic goal to a realization that reality and happiness cannot coexist in the natural world. George and Lennie share a dream of their future. Throughout their adventure, Lennie asks George to repeat the details of their desires. George describes how the two will work on ranches until they have the money needed to buy a ten acre farm, where they can grow their own crops and raise chicken, pigs, cows, and rabbits. They will “‘live off the fatta the land’” (14). George saves each penny he makes and does not give in to temptation like most ranch hands who waste their earnings on alcohol or card games.
