A View on War via Poetry Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke were both popular war poets in the First World War era. Owen’s “Dulce et Decorum Est” and Brooke’s “The Soldier” both share a unique vision of death in war yet these poems are as different as night and day. I think the poems are as different as the men were themselves. Wilfred Owen is often regarded as the greatest war poet who used the English language. His poem “Dulce et Decorum Est” reflects words often shared at the beginning of the First World War. These words are roughly translated to “It is sweet and right”, meaning it is sweet and right to die for your country. This phrase was often spoken by war supporters and propagandists. Indeed, it may have been these very words that made Owen join the troops and fight in the front lines. Owen’s mother sent him copies of The Daily Mail while he worked as a private tutor in France. Propaganda in that publication made Owen feel guilty. He returned to England and volunteered for service in 1915.
