Transgenic Organisms
Transgenic organisms are plants that contain a gene or genes which have been artificially inserted instead of the plants acquiring them through pollination (What). The process by which this happens is known as recombinant DNA technology. In this process, DNA molecules from different sources are combined in vitro, an artificial environment, into one molecule to create a new gene. The modified DNA is then transferred into an organism causing a certain trait to be expressed. The end result is referred to as a Genetically Modified Organism, or GMO (Wikipedia).
The phenomenon of gene selection has been going on for thousands of years. Farmers would alter the genetic make-up of crops in order to promote faster growth, larger seeds, and sweeter fruits without any scientific knowledge of how it was accomplished (History).
