Mise-en-Scne Analysis Exercise on: Do The Right Thing Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing represents the severe racial tensions that exist between different cultures within a society through specific mise-en-scène elements. Through these visual design and composition choices made by the director Spike Lee, production designer Wynn Thomas, and cinematographer Ernest Dickenson, the movie influences the audience's mood, causing the viewers to experience the aura of the place and time where the movie takes place. In the fourth shot of the scene where Ella, Ahmad, Martin, Punchy, C and Radio are introduced, the audience is powerfully immersed in the movie's mise-en-scène. The setting of Do the Right Thing is a black neighborhood in Brooklyn. Spike Lee focused a lot on the usage of bright colors to convey specific feelings on the movie's audience. A very important catalyst to the movie's racial tensions is the heat, and the setting helps represent this.
