Hamlet's Tragedy Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

One of William Shakespeare’s greatest works, Hamlet, is known as one of the most well known tragedies of all time. But, why is this so? The definition of a tragedy is “a form of drama characterized by seriousness and dignity, usually involving a conflict between a character and some higher power, such as the law, the gods, fate, or society”. Shakespeare fulfills this definition in many ways throughout the play. However, the main character that fits this description of a tragedy is young Hamlet who must deal with his father’s death and the eventual tribulation of finding revenge through the murderer’s death. This forces Hamlet to change and mature into many different characters over the course of the play that are represented in his actions and soliloquies of his feelings and emotions at the time. In the beginning of the play, the country of Denmark is shown to be in a type of overcast over the passing of King Hamlet.
