In 1980, Harwood said that her “themes were the old ones: love, friendship, art, memory”. Looking closely at two of her poems, what does she make of any or all of these? What Gwen Harwood makes of love in the poems ‘The Violets’ and ‘The Lion’s Bride’ is that on one hand it can be like memory and can stick with you forever, still there regardless of time, and on the other hand, dangerous. The poem ‘The Violets’ portrays love as the memory that will stick with you forever, still there regardless of time and as nostalgic through her memory of her parents. Yet, it is more her father that this love is reflected upon, as he is the one clearly cherished and respected by Harwood, as they enter ‘into [her] father’s house…’ This poem is also a clear reflection on her love for Romantic poetry, romantic with a capital R. The way in which she describes nature in her presence, ‘…[the] frail melancholy flowers among ashes and loam’, clearly a reflection on her love, a weak love at that, of her garden and the environment in Tasmania.
