Introduction “Macbeth” is one of Sir William Shakespeare’s most popular tragedies. Apparently, Macbeth was a good king who passed many progressive laws. Shakespeare, however, paints quite a different portrait of Macbeth, exploring the representations of gender specifically focusing on masculinity to modern audiences. Shakespeare’s representation of masculinity through lady Macbeth’s interactions with Macbeth and king Duncan can influence an audience to perceive a modern interpretation. Clearly, this will examine Shakespeare’s concept of masculinity through male interactions with lady Macbeth. Gender history In order to examine character representations of masculinity, it is necessary to consider the historical context.
