Poverty vs. Minimum Wage Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Webster’s Dictionary defines poverty as the state of one who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions” (Webster 1). Every year, more and more people both nation and worldwide fall into this social trap, with very little hopes of ever recovering from their downfalls. While many people believe that the poverty-stricken people we see everyday are just victims of their own pure laziness and lack of desire for education, the truth is that many of these people fall into the category of the nations working poor, which makes up more than half of the nations poor. In order to try to eliminate the number of the nations poor, including the working poor, the first governmentally institutionalized the minimum wage was set into place in 1912, by the state of Massachusetts. The first nationwide minimum wage was then instituted over twenty years later, in 1933, at twenty-five cents an hour.
