Elizabethan Era Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Elizabethan Era Theatre The first suitable theatre in records was called the Theatre. Before the Theatre was built in 1576 plays were performed in courtyards of inns and sometimes in the houses of noblemen. After the assembly of the Theatre many open air playhouses opened in London. They included but were not limited to the Rose, the Hope, and the Globe. By law these playhouses were located out of town because theatre had been banished. Probably the most well-known play house was the Globe. The Globe was built in 1599 by a company that William Shakespeare had a stake in. Shakespeare would receive approximately 10% of the profits, even though he had a 20% stake holding. The hard work constructing the Globe barely had time to pay off before the Globe went up in flames in 1613. A canon was fired during a performance which caught the roof on fire. Plays performed in the theatre could be observed by thousands of people. The majority of the audience stood in the open pit. However, rich nobles had the luxury of watching from a chair set on the side of the stage. Afternoon......
