The Symbolic Nature of “The Storm” In Kate Chopin’s short story “The Storm”, the narrative tells of a married woman, Calixta, who shares a passionate sexual encounter with Alcée, a man from her past. Chopin creatively utilizes a vast amount of symbolism in this short and descriptive storyline. In literature, symbols usually have meanings of their own and frequently suggest some further meaning in addition to itself. By using classic symbolism, symbolic acts, and conventional symbolism Chopin reveals the secret sexual passions of a woman suppressed by the confines of marriage. The title of this short story is classically symbolic with an assortment of meanings. The first is literal given that it is describing the forces of nature that cause an actual weather storm to occur during the story. The story title is also symbolic of the sexual tension that Calixta and Alcée experienced when he had “unthinkingly drawn her into his arms”.
