America and Her Man Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

America and Her Man The ways in which America has been portrayed in literature and cinema have always been critically analyzed and have often led to conflicting feelings by readers and viewers about the characteristics of America and Her man. These portrayals, however, have a positive affect on the way Americans see their history, what they are as a country, and who they are as its citizens. There are no greater mediums than literature and cinema to inform the American society on its character. By using examples from the film The Patriot (Emmerich, 2000) and the articles Violence in the Western Film by Lee Clark Mitchell and Democratic Vistas by Walt Whitman, this essay will discuss how America and the American man are portrayed in both the film and writings compared to how Europeans are portrayed. The Patriot takes place in 1776, about a peaceful farmer, Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson), with a heroic but brutal past, who is driven to lead the colonies to freedom and release his family from British tyranny after his son Gabriel (Heath Ledger) signs ......
