QUALITIVE ANALYSIS Finding an unknown substance Introduction Qualitative analysis is a procedure to determine the identity of a substance using a series of simple chemical tests. All materials are classified as either pure substances or a mixture. Pure substances have distinctive physical and chemical properties and tests can be used to find out whether a substance is pure. A mixture may contain two or more chemical substances and chemists use qualitative analysis is to determine which substances are present in a mixture. The Flame Test The flame test is where a coloured light is produced when the ions of some metal elements are heated in a hot Bunsen burner flame. You then get the Bunsen burner and turn it to the blue flame which is the hottest flame. It is the behaviour of the electrons that produces the light, so ions with different numbers of electrons produce light of a different colure.
