Flora and Fauna Transformations in Ovid’s Metamorphoses Ovid’s Metamorphoses contains many kinds of metamorphosis or change of body. Every episode in the poem involves some kind of transformation. Some are the central idea of the myth; some are just incidental to the stories in which they appear. Some of the characters are turned into plants and stones, and some of them are transformed into animals. The transformations are performed by gods for a number of different reasons, for seduction or betrayal, for discovery or revelation. However, there is a pattern in Ovid’s tales, it is the relationship between the reason a character undergoes a metamorphosis and the object that person is changed into. Most of the transformations can be divided into two categories: transformations that are performed as a punishment and transformations in means of escape an intolerable situation.
