The concepts of identity and persona in comedy Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Persona is the most important part of a Comedian’s act. Persona is the aspect of identity in a certain situation, the situation here being comedy. As soon as a comedian becomes known they start working on the mainstream ‘club circuit’ . It is after a while of performing countless shows that the illusion of their character and the persona they control precedes the comic and his/her material. Bill Bailey’s persona precedes him; he has been described as a ‘Medieval Roadie’ and as a ‘Stars in their Eyes Meat Loaf contestant’ by himself. These descriptions build Bill Bailey’s reputation; the merchandise he has sold publicises his personas wherever people decide to wear it. This is a prime example of where his persona comes before his identity. The definition of identity is the state or fact of remaining the same one. With comedians, identity is lost to their persona. They undertake a character with a different name and a different lifestyle; Bill Bailey was born Mark Bailey, and I’m sure he did not contemplate religious theories and long hair when he was younger.
