Mary Shelley wrote the novel Frankenstein at the age of 18 while on holiday in Geneva with her husband Percy Shelley, Lord Byron and John Polardi. Lord Byron challenged the rest of the group to a ghost story contest and Frankenstein was her entry. Both Mary Shelleys parents were radical writers but died when Shelley was 10. The novel was written in the industrial revolution where man had started to create monsters of the modern age, such as mills and presses which where out of mans control. Shelley may have written this novel as a warning to contemporary society with regard to the industrialisation of society, where man made monsters where now dominating every aspect of modern day living. She may have wanted to demonstrate that man cannot always control things that he has made himself. This story parallels with modern day research, such as stem cell research and human cloning where we are uncertain of the final outcome.
