The Hills Of An White Elephant Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

When I first started reading this story I really didn’t get who the character were.They basically refer to the characters in the story as a man and girl. You do not even know how they look like or even their what they are wearing. There is nothing we real know about the characters except we can maybe tell that “the man” a little bit older and “the girl” is younger, maybe eighteen or nineteen? One reason for assuming this bare-bones guesswork lies in tone of “the girl.” The reason assume that “the girl is that young because the way she acts in the story. She basically acts like she will do anything to please her man. In contrast, we have no idea how to react to Hemingway’s characters. Had Hemingway said that the girl, for example, spoke “sarcastically,” or “bitterly,” or “angrily,” or that she was “puzzled” or “indifferent,” or if we were told that the man spoke with “an air of superiority,” we could more easily come to terms with these characters. Instead, Hemingway so removes himself from them and their actions that it seems as though he himself knows litt......
