When I first started reading this story I really didnt get who the character were.They basically refer to the characters in the story as a man and girl. You do not even know how they look like or even their what they are wearing. There is nothing we real know about the characters except we can maybe tell that the man a little bit older and the girl is younger, maybe eighteen or nineteen? One reason for assuming this bare-bones guesswork lies in tone of the girl. The reason assume that the girl is that young because the way she acts in the story. She basically acts like she will do anything to please her man.
In contrast, we have no idea how to react to Hemingways characters. Had Hemingway said that the girl, for example, spoke sarcastically, or bitterly, or angrily, or that she was puzzled or indifferent, or if we were told that the man spoke with an air of superiority, we could more easily come to terms with these characters. Instead, Hemingway so removes himself from them and their actions that it seems as though he himself knows litt......
