The Battle of Actium was a naval battle of the Roman Civil War between Mark Antony and Octavian . It was fought on September 2, 31 BC, near the Roman colony of Actium in Greece (near the modern-day city of Preveza), on the Ionian Sea. Octavian's fleet was commanded by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, Antony's fleet was supported by the fleet of his lover, Cleopatra, queen of Ptolemaic Egypt. The significance of the battle was that it won by the forces of Octavian, whose victory led him to be titled the Princeps Augustus, and eventually to be considered the first Roman Emperor. The consequences of the battle were the deaths of Antony, Cleopatra and Ptolemy Caesar and many soldiers. As well as Egypt annexed to Rome and Octavian establishing authority over eastern provinces. Octavian had kept communication between Antony and Lepidus, and a meeting was arranged between them during which there was reconciliation and some hard bargaining about their immediate futures, and then they marched on Rome.
