An Escape From The Doll’s House: Nora Breaks Free In A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen, Nora develops into a strong enough character where she is able to escape from her doll's house; however, this rebelled against the norms of society in the 1800's. Henrik Ibsen was known to write about women rebelling against expectations placed on them in society. The protagonist, Nora is expected to act dependent, however her stages of development allow her to break free of her husband’s oppressive dictatorship. During the 1800's, Norway was one of the few states that did not insist new rights and freedoms; it was not until the second half of the nineteenth century women gained more equality. “Norway was one of the few European States in which the French Revolution of 1789 did not inspire the masses to demand new liberties. While other countries experienced tumultuous times, Norway busily reaped the benefits of supplying exports and shipping services to any country involved in the wars taking place elsewhere” (Moss and Wilson 111).
