Mind Brain Identity Theory Vs Functionalism Determining the mindÂ’s role in the world can be very confusing. It is not uncommon to relate the mind to the brain. In fact, we know that the mind and the brain must work together. If you have the desire to raise your hand (mental state) your hand will raise. We know that mental states cause physical states. However, the brain is a physical object, whereas it is not certain if the mind is. If something pokes you, you feel a mental state of pain, but how can something poke through a state that is not physical? In other words, how can a physical object such as a needle, cause something weightless (the mind) to perform an experience? Philosophers investigate the role and definition of the mind through many theories. The Mind-Brain-Identity Theory is well known in philosophy. This theory states that mental events are brain processes. Philosophers of this theory believe that when you have a mental state, such as desire or sensation, it is a brain process.
