“Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” is a controversial novella about the duality of human nature. Robert Louis Stevenson writes about the ways that all humans have two sides to their personality. He used the two characters Jekyll and Hyde to show this in the novella. I think that Stevenson is trying to illustrate the existence of ultra-egos, and is showing the two-faced nature of society. The society that Robert Louis Stevenson grew up and lived in was plagued by an under-current of behaviour that was considered un-acceptable. In the Victorian times there was a side of society that was known about, but that was never spoken about. I think that this has altered Stevenson’s view on humanity hugely. Also, around about the time that Stevenson was growing up was the time that London was living in the fear of “Jack the Ripper”. I think that this influenced the scenes of violence in the novella. The “ripper” was thought to be an upper-class citizen and a doctor. This is because of the way that he dissected the dead bodies of his victims.
