Geography When most individuals think of Cuba they think of cigars and a very hot climate. Cuba has a lot more to offer. Cuba is the largest island of the West Indies and make up the Greater Antilles archipelago along with Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico. It was discovered in 1492 by Christopher Columbus. Cuba is located south of the Tropic of Cancer in the Caribbean Sea and its western tip extends into the Gulf of Mexico between Florida and the Yucatan Peninsula. The capital of Cuba is Havana which is ninety two miles from Key West, Florida. This island is popular for its white sandy beaches, but most of it is a limestone plain. Only a small portion is covered by mountains. Unlike the United States, Cuba is ruled by a dictator, President Fidel Castro. He is the decision maker involved in all aspects of government and national decision making (Sheehan, 1997). The People The majority of the people living in Cuba is of Spanish descent and primarily speaks Spanish. Cuba’s population is around eleven million in which almost three million are children.
