Domain and Range - Inverses of Functions Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Inverses of Functions The first thing one must do when looking to find the inverse of a function f(x) is to actually see if there is an inverse. The way to do this is to see if the function is a one-to-one function. The definition of a one-to-one function is “a function f is said to be one-to-one if, for a and b its domain, f(a)=f(b) implies that a=b. This basically means that if one were to graph the function, or even a rough sketch of it were to be made, the graph would pass the horizontal line test. This is necessary to do because if the function did not pass the horizontal line test, there would be no inverse and one would waste a great deal of time trying to find a non-existent inverse function. Once it is determined that the function does indeed have an inverse, it is necessary to find the inverse function algebraically. This can be done through taking just two simple steps.
