On November 2, 1920, my grandmother was one of the more than eight million American women who for the first time in history went to the polls and exercised her right to vote. Thomas Jefferson had declared equality the foundation of American government; however, it had taken more than one hundred and forty years for women finally to attain full citizenship in the United States. Unfortunately, the two women who had fought the hardest and the longest for women rights, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, were no longer alive to cast a ballot. However, had Stanton and Anthony been alive on that day they would have basked in delight to see the dream they had fought so hard for had finally come true. Moreover, had Stanton and Anthony been alive in the early 1980’s they would have been familiar with a very popular television commercial for Virginia slim cigarettes.
