Review of Polar Paradigms In Poetics: Chinese and Western Literary Premises by Eugene Eoyang Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The main purpose of this article is to understand the differences between Eastern and Western literature and why these differences are the way they are. The beginning of the article introduces some general questions that relate to East-West comparative literature. But then the author states that the questions are absurd and that any speculations derived from these questions would be meaningless. The reason for this is that when we ask questions such as those we do so from a certain cultural perspective, whether that’s East or West. And by viewing the subject from either one of those points the analyzer has already doomed himself to failure. The author uses the analogy of trying to compare apples and oranges when trying to explain how hard it is to compare Eastern and Western Literature. The solution to this problem is to view the issue from a “multiple perspective.” We cannot approach the situation from a culturally neutral point of view because our particular cultures affect how we view things.
