The novel "Great Expatiations" written by Charles Dickens (1861) in the Victorian times where more people were class oriented as-apposed to now. In the Victorian era of the United Kingdom social class was a national obsession, the only way you could move up in class was to marry an upper class person. The novel also partly represents his life. Dickens develops this theme of class with Pip's visit to Satis house. Charles Dickens was influenced heavily by his surrounding environment and nearly all his books reflect his own life. Dickens had 6 brothers and sisters. His father was put in prison because of his debt. Because of this Charles was forced to go to work from a young age to help the family much like Pip who was also forced to work from an early age. Before Dickens father was sent to prison he pointed out a house which was on the hills to Charles. After Dickens became successful as a writer he bought the house on the hills which his father pointed out to him and said you could live there one day if you work hard much like what is happening to Pip when Dickens bought the house......
