Controversies of Genetically Modified Food Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Genetically modified food is a highly controversial topic. There are people that believe that genetically modified food is unsafe to eat. While the government and the American Medical Association believe that the modified crops are not a threat to humans or the environment. These bioengineered crops now occupy approximately 50 million acres of U.S. soil. (Waltman, 1999) What is genetically modified food? It is a food whose DNA has been altered by introducing genetic material from another organism. (Waltman, 1999) The food is altered when you take genes with a specific trait that you want the food to have and it is placed in bacteria. This is then combined with the bacteria with cells from the plant you want to affect in a culture dish. The bacteria will then infect the cells and alter their DNA, and then a new plant sprouts from that. These plants have to be grown for several generations until the new trait is stabile.
