The romantic poet Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote two poems on the subject of medieval Arthurian legend, namely 'The Lady of Shallot' and 'The Passing of Arthur'. Whilst both poems share the middle aged setting and romantic aestheticism, they are very different in structure and composition, showing the poet's craft and versatility. Tennyson followed the romantic and thespian movements in writing his poetry. It was incipient in the latter half of the eighteenth century and gained strength in the industrial revolution. Romanticism was a revolt against the aristocratic social and political wealth and against scientific rationalisation of the natural world. The most common embodiment was in strong emotion and the sublime beauty of nature. Many romantics focussed on the classical ideals and looked in retrospect at past eras, as did Tennyson with his poems. He uses a medieval style of ballad to convey the setting of his legends.
