Autism
The small child sits in the corner of the room, twiddling with the shoestrings fastened to a pair of white sneakers. He has been sitting in that corner for a long period of time, almost as if he existed in his own little world. The other family members make an effort to attract his attention and play with him, but he pays no mind to them, or he screeches at the top of his lungs if they attempt to stir him from his corner. Does this behavior seem a little odd? This child is diagnosed with the Pervasive Developmental Disorder known as Autism. Autism, a neurological disorder first described by Dr. Leo Kanner in 1943, affects children as early as the age of 12 months (Common 1). Although a known cause has eluded researchers for decades, much speculation for autisms cause exists; however, parents use many characteristics to detect this disorder in their children.
