The first real diagnosed case of PTSD was not given until 1980 when the third edition of the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental Disorders) was published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Before this book was published what we now know as PTSD was called Stress Response Syndrome, which was given its name back in 1952. Another interesting fact is that in the second edition of the DSM PTSD was classified as a situational disorder and it was said that if symptoms lasted longer than six months then the soldier had a pre-existing condition; meaning that their service in the war had nothing to do with what they were going through.
